What Ahrefs costs in 2026

Lite is $129 a month for one user, 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords, and 1,000 credits. Standard, at $249, removes the credit limit and adds Content Explorer. Starter is $29 a month, but with only 200 credits and no MCP.

One person on Lite pays $1,548 a year, or $1,290 if you pay yearly. OpenSEO is $120 a year. For every plan and add-on, see our Ahrefs pricing breakdown.

What OpenSEO costs

One plan: $10 a month, with $10 of usage included. Usage pays for new data you look up. Opening results you already have, or exporting them, doesn't use any.

What you runAbout what it costs
A backlink overview of a domain, with a year of history8¢
A keyword research search5¢
Tracking 100 keywords every week$1.09 a month
Tracking the same 100 keywords every day$7.60 a month
A standard site auditIncluded
Your Search Console dataIncluded

Most people stay within the included $10. A business owner who researches 100 keywords and checks 20 backlink profiles a month, and tracks 50 keywords weekly, uses about $7.50. A freelancer managing 15 client sites spends about $27 a month. Estimate your own month.

If you need more, top-up credits never expire. If you run out, research pauses until you add more, so there are no surprise bills.

Why people look for an Ahrefs alternative

  • Credits run out. On Lite, every report, filter, and date change uses a credit. "Every single click costs you," as one Trustpilot reviewer put it.
  • Teams pay per person. Lite allows two extra users, at up to $40 a month each.
  • Good features cost more. Content Explorer needs the $249 plan, and the $29 plan has no MCP.
  • No trial, few refunds. You can't try Ahrefs first, and refunds are only for monthly plans you haven't used.

What's different about OpenSEO

You pay for data, not clicks

Ahrefs Lite counts your clicks against a monthly allowance. OpenSEO charges for new data instead, so going back over results and exporting them don't use credits. There's one plan with every feature, unlimited projects, and no per-seat fees.

It's built for business owners, not just SEO pros

Ahrefs is a professional's tool, with dozens of reports and a filter for everything. OpenSEO focuses on the SEO work most businesses need. If you're new to SEO, the SEO coach skill explains what the numbers mean and what to do next.

"It's so straightforward and incredibly easy to get started. OpenSEO gives you the complete setup, stripped of all the fluff that you get elsewhere."

Tom Raine, OpenSEO user

It's open source

The code is public under the MIT license, so you can read it, change it, or self-host it. If the hosted version ever stopped being worth the price, you could run the same tool yourself. Why we're open source.

OpenSEO MCP vs Ahrefs MCP

Both let an AI agent like Claude work with SEO data. Here's how they differ:

OpenSEOAhrefs
Cheapest plan with MCPFree trial, then $10 a monthLite, $129 a month
What it usesYour normal credits200,000 API units a month

Connect Claude, Codex, Cursor, or another MCP client to https://app.openseo.so/mcp. Your agent gets 59 tools for keywords, live Google results, competitors, backlinks, rank tracking, local search, site audits, Search Console, and Google Analytics, plus skills that walk it through common SEO jobs.

Backlinks are Ahrefs' strength. It runs its own crawler, has recorded 35 trillion backlinks, and updates its index every 15 to 30 minutes. OpenSEO uses DataForSEO's index, which is smaller.

For your own site and your competitors, OpenSEO shows backlinks, referring domains, anchor text, spam scores, and new and lost links over the past year. That's enough to check your links, clean up spam, and see who links to your competitors. If link building is your full-time job, stay with Ahrefs.

Free options

If you only need data on your own site, start free. Ahrefs Free (formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools) audits sites you own and shows up to 1,000 of their backlinks and keywords. Google Search Console shows your real clicks and rankings. Neither lets you research competitors or find new keywords, and that's where a paid tool comes in.

How to switch from Ahrefs

  1. Sign up. You get trial credits, and you don't need a card.
  2. Create a project for your site and connect Google Search Console.
  3. Export your keywords from Ahrefs Rank Tracker and paste them into an OpenSEO rank tracker.
  4. Pull backlinks for your site and your top competitors, then run a site audit.
  5. Connect your AI agent to https://app.openseo.so/mcp.
  6. Cancel Ahrefs under Account Settings, then Billing. Your plan runs to the end of the period, then drops to Ahrefs Free.

FAQ

Is there a free Ahrefs alternative?

Not for keyword and competitor research, since that data costs money in every tool. For your own site, Ahrefs Free and Google Search Console are both free. OpenSEO is free to try, then $10 a month with $10 of usage included.

Is OpenSEO cheaper than Ahrefs?

For most people, yes: $10 a month with $10 of usage included, against $129 for Ahrefs Lite. Tracking the same 750 keywords weekly that Lite includes costs about $8 a month in OpenSEO. Heavy research costs more.

How are OpenSEO credits different from Ahrefs credits?

Ahrefs credits count clicks: reports, filters, date changes. OpenSEO credits are money, spent when you look up new data. Going back over results you already have is free.

Does OpenSEO have an MCP server like Ahrefs?

Yes. Add https://app.openseo.so/mcp to Claude, Codex, Cursor, or another MCP client. It's included from the free trial on. Ahrefs MCP needs the $129 Lite plan or higher.

What about white-label reports?

Your AI agent can make them. Through MCP, it pulls a client's rankings, keywords, and backlinks, then saves a finished report to their project, which you can share by link or print to PDF with your branding. Save the format as a report template, or turn it into your own skill, and every client gets the same report each month.

Can my team use OpenSEO?

Yes. Invite teammates by email. There's no per-seat fee.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes, from the billing portal. If OpenSEO isn't for you, email ben@openseo.so within 30 days of a charge for a refund.
