OpenSEO

Agent setup

Connect your AI agent to OpenSEO and keep its SEO skills up to date.

OpenSEO connects your agent to live SEO data through MCP. Skills give it reusable workflows for keyword research, audits, competitor research, and other SEO tasks.

Set up your agent

Copy this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Grok Bot, Hermes, or another agent. It asks your agent to use its supported installation method and guide you through any steps you need to do yourself.

Setup prompt
Set up OpenSEO in this agent. Do what you can; guide me through anything that needs my input.

## 1. Check this agent

- Identify this agent and its version. Ask only if you cannot tell.
- Check for an existing OpenSEO connection. Preserve other integrations and avoid duplicates.

## 2. Install the plugin first

The official plugin bundles MCP + SEO skills, with OpenSEO namespacing and shared updates.

- **Codex:** follow the [plugin guide](https://openseo.so/docs/codex-plugin).
- **Claude Code:** follow the [plugin guide](https://openseo.so/docs/claude-code-plugin).
- **Other agents:** verify plugin compatibility in their current documentation.
- Check the installed client's help before running commands.

## 3. Fall back to MCP + skills

If the plugin is unsupported:

- Add `https://app.openseo.so/mcp` using the [MCP guide](https://openseo.so/docs/mcp).
- Install the [public SEO skills](https://openseo.so/docs/skills/setup) for this agent only.
- Do not copy internal repository skills or duplicate bundled skills.
- If skills are unsupported, use MCP alone and link to the workflow guides.

For self-hosted OpenSEO, use its endpoint directly; the official plugin targets the hosted service.

## 4. Sign in

- **Prefer OAuth.** Start login; let me approve it in my browser.
- **No OAuth?** Send me to `https://app.openseo.so/settings` → API keys. Have me enter the key in the client's secret settings or environment, never chat or a repository.
- **Manual setup needed?** Use this agent’s current documentation and give only the steps I need to do myself.

## 5. Reload and verify

- Use the current agent’s native reload flow, checking its installed version, help, or official documentation. Prefer automatic discovery or an in-place reload; restart only if required to load the new tools and skills.
- Once tools load in this session, run whoami and list_projects (free reads). Check skill discovery too. If a reload needs my action, give the instructions rather than repeatedly retrying unavailable tools.
- Track installation, sign-in, and verification separately. A connected server is not proof that this session can use its tools. Never claim verification before the free reads succeed.
- Do not create projects or run paid research during installation.

## 6. Finish with a short handoff

Keep progress updates brief. The final reply must be **140 words or fewer** and follow this template:

**Status**
[Briefly say what succeeded or what blocked setup.]

**Next**
1. `[Give the native reload command or UI action for this agent, only if needed.]` Then say “Check that OpenSEO is connected.” Approve sign-in if prompted.
2. Try one of these:
   - `[SEO Audit invocation]` **(recommended)** — find your website's biggest SEO issues.
   - `[SEO Project Setup invocation]` — interview you about your website and set up its project context.
   - `[Keyword Research invocation]` — find keywords worth targeting.
   - `[Local SEO invocation]` — review your Google Business Profile and local competitors.

Want to know what was set up? Just ask.

Adapt the template to the actual result:
- If installation failed, name the blocker and replace reload with the fix. If fully verified, say it is ready and omit reload. Do not claim sign-in failed or is required merely because tools need reloading.
- Recommend this agent’s idiomatic way to invoke each installed skill: its native command, mention, picker, or natural-language request. Use the discovered skill name and plugin namespace; do not assume `/skill-name` works everywhere or create aliases to force it. Check the agent’s help or official documentation when unsure. If skills are unsupported, give equivalent plain-language requests using the connected tools. Recommend workflows; do not run them during installation.
- Keep tool names such as whoami and list_projects in your checks, not the final reply. Omit versions, paths, connection details, skill counts, other integrations, and cleanup commands unless they explain the blocker or I ask. Do not add more sections or a verification checklist.

Approve the OpenSEO sign-in in your browser when prompted. Once setup is complete, ask your agent to use SEO Coach to help you choose what to do next.

You can also copy this prompt from Agent setup in OpenSEO. For a self-hosted instance, use its Agent setup page so the prompt includes your own server address.

Prefer to set it up yourself? Follow the instructions for your agent below. If the setup prompt already completed installation, skip to Update your skills.

Claude Code

Run inside Claude Code to install MCP and the public SEO skills:

/plugin marketplace add every-app/open-seo
/plugin install openseo@openseo

If Claude asks you to activate the plugin, run /reload-plugins. Follow the sign-in prompt, then try /openseo:seo-coach. See the Claude Code plugin guide for troubleshooting.

Codex CLI

Run in your terminal:

codex plugin marketplace add every-app/open-seo
codex plugin add openseo@openseo

Reload or restart Codex if the plugin is not available yet, then sign in:

codex mcp login openseo

Ask Codex to use SEO Coach. See the Codex plugin guide for troubleshooting. For plugins installed through a desktop directory, use that directory's controls.

Hermes

Use the setup prompt above to connect MCP. To install SEO Coach through the Hermes skills hub, run in your terminal:

hermes skills install every-app/open-seo/plugins/openseo/skills/seo-coach

Repeat with the names of other OpenSEO skills you want. Hub installations retain their source so Hermes can check for updates later. See Hermes skill management.

Grok Bot

Paste the setup prompt into your Bot. Open Marketplace in the sidebar to manage packaged skills and connectors. Find private skills under Your plugins → Manage plugins and skills → Private skills. Private skills are shared across your Bots.

Follow the Bot's instructions for any steps you need to complete yourself. See Grok Bot skills.

Claude web/Desktop and other agents

Follow the MCP connection guide, then install skills through your agent's supported skill manager. Claude web/Desktop manages custom skills under Customize → Skills; its flow differs from the Claude Code plugin.

For agents using the skills CLI, choose public OpenSEO skills interactively:

npx skills add https://github.com/every-app/open-seo/tree/main/plugins/openseo/skills

Choose the current agent and your preferred installation scope. Skip this if the OpenSEO plugin already supplies your skills. See manual skill setup for other options.

Update your skills

When OpenSEO releases improved skills, update the copies installed in your agent. Updating the MCP connection alone does not update those files.

Paste this prompt into the agent where you use OpenSEO. It asks the agent to check how the skills were installed and preserve your connection settings and personal edits.

Update prompt
Update my installed OpenSEO skills using https://openseo.so/docs/agent-setup#update-your-skills.

Identify this agent and how OpenSEO was installed. Use the matching plugin or skills installer, checking the installed client's help before running commands. Update only OpenSEO in its existing scope. Preserve my MCP endpoint, sign-in, and personal skill edits; ask before replacing conflicting edits. Avoid duplicate skills and do not install internal repository skills.

If the skills were copied manually, compare them with https://github.com/every-app/open-seo/tree/main/plugins/openseo/skills and update the installed public skill folders, including their supporting files. For Grok Bot or another agent without a verified update command, use its supported skill management flow or give me the exact manual steps available in this version.

Reload skills if supported. If I need to reload or start a new session, tell me what to do. Verify the updated skill files and that this agent can discover them; an active MCP connection alone does not prove the skills updated. Briefly tell me what changed and anything left to do. Do not run SEO research during the update.

To update manually, use the method that matches your installation below.

Update the Claude Code plugin

Run inside Claude Code:

/plugin marketplace update openseo
/plugin update openseo@openseo
/reload-plugins

You can enable automatic updates in /pluginMarketplacesopenseoEnable auto-update. Third-party marketplaces have this off by default. Reload when Claude prompts you to activate an update. See Claude's plugin update documentation.

Update the Codex CLI plugin

Run in your terminal:

codex plugin marketplace upgrade openseo

Reload or restart Codex if the updated skills are not available. If your CLI rejects a command, check codex plugin --help for the commands supported by your version. See OpenAI's marketplace documentation.

Update Hermes hub skills

Check for updates, then update each installed OpenSEO skill by name. For example:

hermes skills check
hermes skills update seo-coach

Repeat for your other installed OpenSEO skills. Hermes skips locally edited skills by default. Review those edits before replacing them; only add --force if you want to discard them. See Hermes's update lifecycle.

Update skills installed with the skills CLI

List your installations, then update the OpenSEO skills by name. For example:

npx skills list
npx skills update seo-coach seo-audit

Use the names you actually installed and choose the same project or global scope. Pass -g for global skills or -p for project skills. Back up personal edits before updating. Run the setup command to select any newly added workflows separately. See the skills CLI documentation.

Update Grok Bot or manually copied skills

Use the update prompt above. For Grok Bot, open Marketplace → Your plugins → Manage plugins and skills to find the installed skill or plugin. Its public documentation does not currently specify an upstream skill-update command, so use the management controls available in your version.

For manually copied skills, compare your installed copies with the public OpenSEO skill folders. Preserve personal edits and replace the complete skill folder, including supporting files. Use your agent's skill manager for uploaded skills, such as Claude's Customize → Skills.

After updating, reload the skills or start a new session if needed. Ask the agent to confirm it can find the updated OpenSEO skills before starting your next SEO task.
